They ranged from the owner of the Independent and the Evening Standard, Alexander Lebedev, to Alex Salmond, first minister of Scotland and Ellis Watson, chief executive of Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment. But the surprising star of the show, writes Ray Snoddy, was an unassuming editor who has never sought the limelight and who is on the verge of retirement.
