The local newspaper industry is going through a torrid time at the moment, with circulation falls, title and edition closures and redundancies. And, while there are likely to be more tough times ahead, writes Ciaran O’Neill, there are also reasons to be optimistic.

Ciaran O'Neill
Ciaran O’Neill has been editor of the Derry News since 2008. The paper was selected as UK Weekly Newspaper of the Year (circulation below 20,000) at the Society of Editors’ Regional Press Awards in 2010, and also received the accolade of Northern Ireland Weekly Newspaper of the Year in the same year. Ciaran started his career with the Derry Journal in 1994 and has also worked for the Belfast Telegraph and Daily Ireland.
