We are looking for a truly outstanding candidate to join the editorial team of the world's longest-running women's magazine.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an individual who is passionate about magazine fiction to be part of the publishing success story that is "The People's Friend".
Reporting to the Editorial Director, and heading up the magazine's dedicated fiction team, the successful candidate will be responsible for shaping the title's fiction strategy, developing new writing talent and leading workshops in writing for the "Friend".
A consuming passion for both contemporary and classic fiction is essential, as are outstanding communication and presentation skills, and a thorough knowledge of the women's magazine market.
You will be skilled in the use of social media, and capable of writing engaging, inspiring content for the title's website. You will also possess the ability to analyse a short story or serial instalment, identify any flaws and guide the author to a successful rewrite.
Key responsibilities include:
- Forward planning and scheduling
- Evaluating fiction submissions
- Working closely with freelance contributors
- Selecting the fiction for every issue
- Contributing digital content on a regular basis
- Leading writing workshops
- Managing budgets
- Leading a team
It is expected that the successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and will have a proven track record in journalism or publishing. A thorough understanding of copyright law and editorial codes of practice is essential, as are outstanding organisational skills.
