Ms Mian, a former solicitor, will join the board with immediate effect after having been appointed in an open and transparent competition by the independent IPSO Appointments Panel, chaired by Sir Hayden Phillips. She replaces Dame Clare Tickell, who stepped down from the Board having been appointed as Chair of the Early Intervention Foundation.
IPSO Chairman, Sir Alan Moses, said: "We had a very strong field for the Board vacancy and I'm delighted that we have been able to appoint someone of Mehmuda's calibre and experience. As IPSO develops its wider regulatory functions the role of the Board will be more and more important in overseeing independent, effective regulation of the press".
Mehmuda Mian said: "A free and responsible press is fundamental. I am very pleased to have been appointed to bring my skills and experience to IPSO and to playing a part in ensuring that members of the public that feel mistreated by the press have somewhere to come to seek resolution."
