Condé Nast appoints Katie Drummond
Katie Drummond: “To come back as WIRED’s global editorial director is the honor of my career. I can’t wait to get started.”

Condé Nast has named Katie Drummond as global editorial director for WIRED. In this role, the publisher says she will be responsible for overseeing the vision and content across all platforms for the brand globally, in addition to leading editorial teams in Italy, Japan, Mexico, the U.K and U.S. Drummond joins WIRED from VICE Media Group, where she oversaw all digital publishing and content as senior vice president of global news & entertainment. She will begin her new role on August 28 and will be based in New York.

Anna Wintour, chief content officer and global editorial director, Vogue said: “Katie is exactly the right editor to lead Wired at a time where the worlds of technology and culture are shifting and colliding every single day. Katie is excited and interested in all of it. She’s driven, direct, a journalist first and foremost, but also a highly original thinker who is full of ideas about how to build new audiences, tell compelling stories, and earn trust. I’m thrilled she’s coming to Wired, which is one of the most important and consequential titles of our rapidly changing moment.”

Katie Drummond said: “Interning at WIRED in 2009 was an opportunity that kickstarted my entire career. From sitting on the floor of the editor in chief’s office during feature pitch meetings to trying my hand as a blogger for, WIRED is where I learned the ins and outs of great journalism,” Drummond says. “To come back as WIRED’s global editorial director is the honor of my career. I can’t wait to get started.”

Drummond’s extensive background in online media spans hard news, technology and lifestyle coverage. At VICE, she led the global expansion of VICE News across Latin America, Europe, and Asia, and oversaw all VICE digital brands including Noisey, Munchies, Rec Room, Motherboard, and Waypoint. She also spearheaded successful off-platform audience development, including the growth of original video reporting and the launch of VICE on Twitch. She also led efforts to create opportunities for these brands across, VICE TV and VICE Studios. During her tenure at VMG, VICE’s digital teams were honored with dozens of major journalism prizes, including an Online Journalism Award for innovative work on TikTok and a Peabody award for the series “Transnational.”

Prior to VICE, Drummond was deputy editor at Medium, where she oversaw editorial content across politics, wellness, science and technology, and ran the audience development team for Medium’s subscription program. Drummond began her career as a reporter, writing for outlets including The New Republic, New York Magazine, Popular Science, Marie Claire and WIRED, where she covered military research and medicine for WIRED’s Danger Room blog. She then moved on to a managing editor role at The Verge, where she launched their science section, the outlet’s first expansion beyond consumer tech. After that, Drummond served as deputy editor for Bloomberg and helped relaunch as a modern, digital destination for global business news. She then went on to executive editor appointments at The Outline and Gizmodo Media Group, where she served as editor in chief of Gizmodo.

Drummond graduated from Queen’s University in Canada with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy before moving to New York in 2008. She is an avid runner and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and their five-year-old daughter Edith.
