Touch Tree Technology, a digital platform provider that transforms PDF magazine archives into mobile-first web experiences, has partnered with Newsstand, a UK online magazine retailer, to launch a fully integrated print-on-demand service for publishers.
The strategic partnership bridges the gap between digital discovery and physical ownership, says the company. By combining Touch Tree’s browser-based archive technology with Newsstand’s on-demand printing and fulfilment infrastructure, publishers can now turn back issues into active, physical retail products without the financial risk of print forecasting, warehousing, or unsold stock.
Publishers hold extensive archives of culturally significant editorial content, yet monetising this material has historically posed severe logistical challenges, added Touch Tree. Short-run litho or digital reprints have typically required capital expenditure, storage overheads, and administrative resources.
The new integration resolves this structural bottleneck directly within the digital reading experience, continued Touch Tree:
- Seamless In-Reader Commerce: Readers exploring back issues on a publisher’s Touch Tree platform can order a single print copy directly from the digital reader, checking out where they are reading without navigating away to third-party stores.
- Benchmark Print Quality: Printing and dispatch are fulfilled end-to-end by Newsstand. Using single-copy production technology, each issue is printed on demand to retail-grade production standards, ensuring paper stock, colour reproduction, and binding match the premium expectations of print collectors.
- Zero Operational Overhead: The service integrates directly into existing Touch Tree deployments. Publishers do not need to manage stock, organise logistics, or adapt internal editorial workflows.
- Granular Curatorial Control: Commercial and editorial teams retain complete authority over inventory selection. Publishers can elect precisely which historical editions are available for on-demand printing, protecting traditional print distribution and subscriber exclusives for current issues while unlocking long-tail revenue from back catalogues.
Brendon Bester, commercial director of Touch Tree Technology, commented: "Our mission is to help media organisations own their audience relationships and build sustainable, high-margin revenue from their intellectual property. Publishers sit on decades of exceptional editorial content, but physical access has traditionally ended once an issue leaves the retail stands. A founding principle at Touch Tree is that great journalism should be 'Never out of print'. By embedding Newsstand’s exceptional print capabilities directly into our mobile-first digital archives, we have closed the loop. Readers can discover an archive story and immediately order a physical keepsake, while publishers monetise their deep back catalogues with zero inventory risk."
David Atkins, managing partner at Newsstand, commented: "We understand, more than most, both the passion readers have for print and the commercial pressures publishers face. Single-copy print on demand only succeeds if both the physical product and the delivery to the consumer are excellent. This exciting partnership with Touch Tree connects our production and global logistics network directly to engaged digital readers at the precise moment of intent, delivering pristine, beautifully finished editions straight to their doors."
The integrated print-on-demand capability is available immediately to publishers operating on the Touch Tree platforms.
