New Guardian Australia editor appointed
David Munk: “I am delighted to have been given the chance to take Guardian Australia forward as the next editor.”

David joined Guardian Australia in 2014, early in its lifespan, and has been an instrumental part of the leadership team as the Guardian has grown its reach and impact in Australia over the past decade, says the publisher – first as international news editor for the Asia Pacific region, and as deputy editor from 2019 onwards. In 2024, he moved into a senior managing editor role in London working with editor-in-chief Katharine Viner and the wider editorial leadership team. He will now return to lead Guardian Australia’s editorial team.

David started his career at the Bristol Evening Post, and worked on various Fleet Street titles including Today and The Daily Mail. He is also a former head of world news at the Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

Katharine Viner, Guardian News and Media editor-in-chief, said: “David has a deep understanding of both the Guardian and Australia, and brings great verve, creativity, openness and commitment to his work. I’ve no doubt that he will continue to build on Guardian Australia’s many successes.”

David Munk, editor of Guardian Australia, said: “I am delighted to have been given the chance to take Guardian Australia forward as the next editor.”

“From small beginnings, the Guardian is now such an important part of Australian society as well as its fast-changing media landscape. Thanks to three brilliant previous editors we have built something special across the land and I will make it my mission to ensure we continue to give our readers, viewers and listeners the courageous, groundbreaking – and crucially independent – journalism they have come to expect from our amazing staff.”
