NYT announces new Times App
Alex Hardiman: “By helping people more easily discover, read, watch and listen to Times journalism, the new Times app is a powerful resource for them to understand the now and make the most of every day.”

The New York Times (NYT) marked a new era for its app earlier this month. The publisher says it has released its most consequential redesign yet – one that cements the app as the home for its journalism and the front door to the full New York Times product portfolio.

The New York Times says it has transformed its app from a single feed to an expanded canvas that now makes it easier to find everything readers want to read and engage with across its report. Breaking news, beat reporting and multipart investigations. Coverage of culture, health, lifestyle and more. The NYT says it’s made it easier to discover other Times products: The Athletic, Games, Cooking, Wirecutter and Audio.

The publisher says when audiences open the app, they land on Today, the app’s center of gravity and the place for the most urgent and important stories of the day. Swiping to the right reveals Election 2024 providing a deeper understanding of candidates, issues and voters; Lifestyle with a visual overview of the best stories in fashion, food, books, wellness and more; Great Reads; and Opinion columnists who interrogate the issues and ideas of the day. Swiping to the left invites audiences to engage with their passions across the rest of our product portfolio, added the publisher, from landing on Games to solve a puzzle, to Cooking to find ideas and inspiration for tonight’s dinner, or to The Athletic to catch up on your local team.

Since The Times announced its subscription strategy two years ago, it says it’s made meaningful progress toward meeting people’s most important news and life needs every day. The NYT says its new app is the latest tangible example of its strategy in action.

“The New York Times app is a crucial part of our audiences’ daily and weekly routines, and serves as a massive entry point to The Times,” said Alex Hardiman, chief product officer. “This remarkable endeavor reflects our continued ambition to get our journalism and products to audiences in more creative, accessible and direct ways. By helping people more easily discover, read, watch and listen to Times journalism, the new Times app is a powerful resource for them to understand the now and make the most of every day.”

“Launching the new Times app is a testament to the expertise of many talented teams,” said Steve Duenes, deputy managing editor overseeing visuals. “The user experience is built on a strong foundation of our core design principles, and this effort reflects design, product and newsroom colleagues working together really successfully.”
